A stump grinder is a purpose built machine. A wheel carrying carbide cutters spins fast and works side to side, taking a bite at a time until the stump is below the surface and the surface flares are gone. The grinder runs into the ground and only handles what is left behind. How deep do you grind a stump?
Depth follows the plan for the spot. A stump under lawn needs enough below grade to hold topsoil and let grass root over it. A fence post hole or a driveway wants more, because you need clean ground to dig and pack. A building pad wants the root zone gone entirely, and that is an excavator pulling the ball rather than a grinder chasing it.
Why did my mulching job leave stumps?
A mulching head cuts at grade and shaves a little under it in soft dirt. It grinds standing wood, not root systems, and it is not built to work below the surface where rock lives. On acreage that is fine, since a flush cut disappears under the chip layer. Where you want a mower, a pad, or a post, the stump is a separate job with a separate machine.
What happens to the grindings?
A ground stump makes a surprising amount of chip and sawdust, more than the hole will hold, since the material fluffs up as it comes out. We can rake it back into the hole and crown it for settling, spread it across a bed, or pile it where you want it. Topsoil is the better fill under new grass, because grindings settle and rob nitrogen while they rot.
